Roll brilliantly white titles against a silent, stark black background, with rays of multi-colored light shooting out from every letter of each title word. As the last title fades, the introductory piano chords of the song Monamour resonate against the darkness.
SCENE 1: EXT. DAY - PRESERVATION PARK, OAKLAND, CA
Simultaneously with the entry of the guitars and drums in the second bar of Monamour, the scene opens on a sun drenched outdoor wedding in front of the Preservation Park bandstand where many bouquets of flowers have been placed to honor the ceremony that is about to take place. The bride and the groom radiate a dream-like quality, and the faces of the guests who surround them in the center of the picturesque square are beatific with vicarious joy. The bride's face is never shown. The groom is Peter Cross. As he stands before the Minister with all the hope and promise of a life long marriage in his eyes, the camera focuses on the the Bible. Suddenly, brief shots of divorce court proceedings filmed in black and white are cut into the scene, beginning with the opening words in the first verse of Monamour, "Every minute without my little one is ash, all our dreams torn and sundered into trash". The contrasting black and white shots against the flower decorated bandstand and the colorful ceremony illustrate the song lyrics and suggest the interplay of light against darkness (good vs. evil) which occurs in the real drama of life itself.
The final chorus of Monamour coincides with the gift of a plain gold wedding ring. As a tender loving hand slowly slides the ring onto the bride's finger, the camera focuses on the engraved inscription which says "SOMEDAY" across the top face. Peter Cross looks up over the minister's head to the giant and formidable United States Federal Building behind Preservation Park. The camera zooms to the fourth floor window where the Federal District Court is located. The ending note of Monamour on the Hammond organ coincides with a zoom through the closed window into the courtroom. SCENE 2: INT. - UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT
All rise. The Honorable Peter B. Spinacchi presides.
The six foot tall, bald burly bailiff looks mesomorphicly powerful in his well fitting uniform. The judge enters from the rear door looking young, healthy, energetic and intensely intelligent, but weariness reflects in his eyes.
Please be seated. I'm tired, I had my 40th birthday yesterday.
The Court Clerk is female, in her mid 20's, with natural red hair, a drop dead gorgeous figure that can't be disguised by her business suit, and she wears big round eyeglasses like a sexy librarian.
The federal defense attorney is male, in his mid 30's, with a crew cut, a plain grey suit, and a stiff posture that strongly suggests a military background.
