This is an early home recording and it's not fully produced.   It's here because it's
my web site, it's one of my earliest songs, and this is my historical archive.

What Are Good Friends For?

I have to have someone to depend on
'Cause sometimes the world succeeds in getting me down
I know you won't mind if I take up your time
And if I can't leave, it won't bother you

But then again, what are good friends for?
To help you get through when you can't be ignored
I don't pretend I want anything more
But then again, what are good friends for?

I don't want to borrow no money
But if I did, I know I could come to you
And if I needed a place to lie down
I'm glad there's someone I could take myself to

But then again, what are good friends for?
To help you get through when you can't be ignored
I don't pretend I want anything more
But then again, what are good friends for?

I need a good shoulder to cry on
And my good friend, there ain't no one but you
And if some day the tables turned all around
You can be sure I'd do the same for you

But then again, what are good friends for?
To help you get through when you can't be ignored
I don't pretend I want anything more
But then again, what are good friends for?

Peter Cross is the songwriter and the singer.

Commentary:

I believe that this is a subject worth writing about and I did a decent job of covering it when I was a teenager. This problem of what good friends really are for has come up again and again in my life, and the answer is supposed to be that they are THERE for you when you need them. Every single one of my good friends, with NO exceptions, turned their backs on me eventually when I descended into my 10 year Great Agony, and I'm very disappointed in them because I would never have turned my back on any one of them if they had experienced the Hell that I went through. So I learned the hard way that "You don't know who your real friends are until you're down and out". I also learned that the vast majority of people are not highly evolved enough to be able to relate with true compassion to a person who is suffering intensely. We can't all be Mother Theresa. Or can we?
