This recording is rather primitive but it's one of only four examples of me singing and
playing acoustic guitar in front of a live audience.   I only did that once.
For Sri Swami Satchidananda.

Hari Om

Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home

Peace is understanding - love is not demanding
Though the paths are many - one truth is worth expanding
And when you feel that light, love is all around you
And it feels so right, happiness is bound to take you home . . .   Om . . .

Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home

Love light is like a river when you become the giver
Sometimes the flow is winding
Though slow, it must deliver
And when you feel that light, love is all around you
And it feels so right, happiness is bound to take you home . . .   Om . . .

Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, hurry hurry home
Hari Om, Hari Om, Hari Om . . .
Hari Om, Hari Om, Hari Om

Commentary:

I always loved this song and I still do because it's simple, memorable, meaningful, and right in the simple rock and roll groove I wanted it to be in. I remember playing this song in front of Swami Satchidananda and a large audience of disciples when I visited him at his Ashram in Connecticut. I was nervous because I never had to play guitar and sing at the same time in front of people (not to mention in front of the Guru). I was a reasonably good drummer who could sing well at the same time as playing the drums. I knew I was treading on sacred ground by doing something with the universal Om mantra that people could misinterpret as being sacreligious. But I was not disappointed by Swamiji or his disciples, and I should have known that he would have no problem at all with what I was trying to do musically because he had no problem with anybody at all and whatever they tried to do for him. While I sang for him, he clapped his huge hands along with the beat and smiled at me non-stop with pure joy in his eyes. He never failed to be appreciative of anybody's effort, no matter how pathetic or off base it might be because he really understood that it's the thought that counts and he always knew what is inside of a person's heart and soul. The disciples were almost equally appreciative and I asked them to sing along with me on the chorus, which they did. They sang very nicely and applauded me enthusiasticly when I was done.
