This is an early home recording and it's not fully produced.   It's here because it's
my web site, it's one of my earliest songs, and this is my historical archive.

Helpless Inside

I see my world so strong and tall
I can't help feeling ashamed of it all
But it's funny how I remember a dream of long ago
Although it's fading I can't let it go - oh no . . .
I had my dream, and you took me there
That dream was a part of us, but it disappeared, yes it did

You make me feel so helpless inside, helpless inside
You make me feel like I wanna lay down and die, lay down and die

What happened to the dream we had?
We were gonna set the world on fire
I must still be dreaming, I can't tell you why - oh no . . .
You gave me love, and it gave me life
But when it comes right down to dealing with reality
You tell me it's nothing but a fool's paradise, oh no, no, no, no, no

You make me feel so helpless inside, helpless inside
You make me feel like I wanna lay down and die, lay down and die

Peter Cross is the songwriter and the singer.

Commentary:

Reading my own lyrics here makes me realize how many times in my life I had psychic premonitions about what Mona would eventually do to me. I was intensely in love with Mona and after my mother had spent a short amount of time with her, she told me "That woman is going to break your heart someday." At that time, I thought that my mother just didn't understand teenage lovers but now I'm astounded by her perception. Aside from having two pretty weak opening lines, I actually think this song has some interesting features, like the chord progression and the two lines, "What happened to the dream we had? We were gonna set the world on fire". That's a pretty good summation of the entire 1960's and what actually did happen to the peace and love generation, don't you think?
