Rastafarian

Rastafarian.....Rastafarian
Rastafarian.....Rastafarian
First come the word, then come the herb
Reggae the beat, Rasta take the heat
Bobby M., my old friend, I remember you still
Wailing, inhaling, on the cliff at Negril
Feeling your spirit, real great to hear it
Come on in, Bobby M., come on in
Come on in, Bobby M., come on in
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
The longer the root, the stronger the flower
Play that flute man, pray for the power

Laguna boy sure can play, he play like he know the way
Strong as a derrick, my friend Eric (The Red)
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Bald headed eagle, make the herb legal
Legalization good for the nation
Illegal lead to badness, please stop the madness
Rasta pay the tax, so the people can relax
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!
Rastafarian....Jah!....Rastafarian....Jah!

Commentary:

Oh my, another song about Mary Jane and the Rastas! Do you know what a Rastafarian is? A Rastafarian is a member of an Afro-Christian revivalist cult which was formed in Jamaica in the early 1920s. Rastafarians believed that the Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was God incarnate (I don't), but they also believe in the sacred herb (I do). I first heard reggae music in N.Y.C. and I took off for Jamaica to meet the people making this music that was so compelling and so unique. I got spooked by the cops in Port Antonio after purchasing something, had to immediately split and I ended up in Negril where I met Jamaica Dandy who took me up into the Blue Mountains to meet the Rastafarians. And after being inducted by the Rastafarians into their religion, he took me down to Kingston to meet Bob Marley, who of course completely blew me away with his awesome songwriting, singing, playing and performing talent. To this day, I have never stopped appreciating the talent of Bob Marley, a man with many serious messages.

This song was actually written on a one hour plane flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles when I was on my way to record basic tracks for The Wetter the Better. I was hearing the music in my mind and it sounded to me like a Bob Marley song, but I didn't recognize it. For a moment, I actually sat there and pondered what Marley album this song could possibly have come from, and then like a spaced out loony who can't even recognize his own voice, I laughed out loud and realized it was another one of my own songs creating itself right there on the plane!
