This is an early home recording and it's not fully produced.   It's here because it's
my web site, it's one of my earliest songs, and this is my historical archive.

My Secret

I have a secret I can't keep that echoes down within my sleep
And burns across my consciousness
A feeling that I can't repress
It was a memory sure as death about a previous life
And all my laughter could not hide my surprise

I had a feeling in my head what it was like when I was dead
Between the stars my mind would spin
The further out, the further in
And I remember years before, another place and time
The memory stands as cold as ice in my mind

Oh I feel the years bringing on my fears
Is it real?   Why should I lie?
You can't understand why I can't pretend
Make me take command - oh please . . .

And now they tell me I'm insane
There's something wrong inside my brain
The questions of my sanity can't make me doubt my memory
Playing with reality - to me it's all a game
There's nothing left to wager if I'm insane

Oh I feel the years bringing on my fears
Is it real?   Why should I lie?
You can't understand why I can't pretend
Make me take command - oh please . . .

Peter Cross is the songwriter and the singer.

Commentary:

There's a lot about this song that I like (and it's not the rhymes either). First of all, it's the subject matter of reincarnation, and I'm still wondering why I even wrote about it as a teenager when it was only many years later that I actually learned all about reincarnation and why the vast majority of humans on this planet believe in it. I think my title is a great one, and the line that says "Between the stars my mind would spin, the further out, the further in" is a classic one - right out of some great science fiction book that I could have written. Playing with reality certainly is a dangerous game that I often play, and that game has taken me to some very interesting places on more than one occasion. My prescient fears turned out to be way more than real, and I eventually had to face them all. But now that part of my life is over, and it's on to bigger and better things.
