Sweet pain, fire burning all of my senses
Few loves stand the test of different directions
Oh, sweet sweet invitation, it does something to me, sweet sweet invitation
Sweet pain: Love is what the children have named you
Oh, sweet sweet invitation, it does something to me, sweet sweet invitation |
Peter Cross is the songwriter, the lead singer and he also sings all the harmony
tracks, plus he's the arranger and the producer.
Commentary:
This song is an example of what I call "philosophy rock" and it's about my search for God. It
assumes that God is calling souls back to the source but that pain through crucifixion is a pre-requisite required course.
Thus, sweet pain - an oxymoron because pain is never sweet. It appears that I called the shot quite
accurately because my complete and utter rejection by every single record company in the music business was immediately
followed by a terminal case of tendonitis. After three years of trying every type of "cure", the physical pain
forced me to stop playing drums altogether and find another way to make a living. I tried songwriting and producing
during those three years and was rejected AGAIN by every single record company. In the end, I had no alternative
other than to give up music because my ambition was making me miserable and for me, the pain of rejection is not sweet at
all.
I wrote this song on bass guitar when I was staying at the Clapp House on Paradise
Island, Bahamas. It's a great story which you can read in
The Interview with Peter Cross, Part 3. I was inspired by Paul McCartney's melodic
bass line in Lady Madonna. Well, of course, no one can touch Paul McCartney on bass except for John Paul Jones, but this
song is the best I can do.
